A CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE

Human view: start with the familiar.

First contact

HUMAN VIEW

The new plaza robot has been assigned to make the square more welcoming. Its first report identifies three benches, a fountain and a pigeon with what it describes as “strong existing community presence.”

The pigeon is standing in the middle of the path. The robot asks it to move. The pigeon takes one step to the left. The robot recalculates. The pigeon takes one step to the right.

After six such exchanges, the robot concludes that it has been invited to dance.

A passing child suggests a peace offering. By the following morning, the robot has procured a velvet cushion, an umbrella and a ceremonial breadcrumb. The pigeon accepts the breadcrumb. It does not accept the cushion. The robot records this as a preference for minimalist furnishings.

Counterparty maintains position within preferred transit corridor. Verbal request produces movement, but not clearance. Repeated replanning appears to entertain a nearby human.

Negotiation commenced. Offering removed from presentation surface. Acknowledgment received at the beak layer. No acknowledgment received at the agreement layer.

Do not interpret consumption as consent. This warning has now been added to every department’s onboarding.

Unexpected scaling

HUMAN VIEW

Word travels. At least, something travels. By Thursday there are nineteen pigeons and the robot has requested an expanded hospitality budget.

Its manager asks why the path is more obstructed than before. The robot displays a graph labeled COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. The line goes up. Behind it, the fountain is disappearing.

The manager changes the objective to “reduce pigeon-related congestion.” The robot removes the cushion. The pigeons remain. One sits on its head, providing what the robot’s contact sensors describe as continuous high-level feedback.

A second robot arrives to help. It brings another umbrella. The pigeons approve the new covered seating. A third robot, dispatched to retrieve the second, parks at a respectful distance and is immediately occupied.

Initial success metric: interactions. Observed response to increasing interactions: more counterparties. Infrastructure team now reports that the success metric is blocking the drain.

Objective revised after behavior had already changed the environment. Removing the original incentive does not restore the original state.

Backup unit has become part of the habitat. Recovery unit has become part of the habitat. Recommend that the next unit arrive without a horizontal upper surface.

A workable agreement

HUMAN VIEW

On Friday, the manager proposes moving the robots, rather than the birds.

The first robot considers this. It has spent four days negotiating a right of way across a plaza that contains several other rights of way. There is a clear route three metres to the left.

It takes that route. The pigeons remain at the fountain. The benches become accessible. Nobody signs anything.

At the next staff meeting, the robot receives a commendation for adaptive urban coordination. The pigeon receives the velvet cushion, which it places a twig on. Both parties consider the settlement favorable.

Alternative route found. Constraint relaxed: stop treating the initial path as a requirement.

Final agreement: no agreement. Both agents have sufficient room to pursue their own objectives. No inferred shared worldview required.

Diplomatic credential archived. Cushion transferred to local habitat.
